O Canada!

Our second Canadian art recovery this month. This Jean Paul Riopelle, Untitled, Watercolour & Ink on Paper was recovered in Alberta, Canada from someone who claimed to have "found it in the trash" and kept it in his closet for 4 years before attempting to sell it in New York.

The artwork was one of five that were stolen from the Douglas Udell Gallery in Edmonton while on exhibition in 2021. The police found this half-hammer crudely welded to a metal pipe (photo below) which was used to pry open the gallery door.

Art Recovery International's Christopher A. Marinello negotiated an unconditional surrender of the artwork on behalf of the victim's insurer.

Special thanks to the Edmonton Police who stayed involved in the case and provided the supporting documentation. Public and private organizations working together to get the job done. We need more of this.
