𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹? No, not quite — at least not yet.

But we are pleased to announce the recovery of this stolen Hermès crocodile bag, valued at €𝟴𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬, which was taken as part of a 32-piece collection of rare handbags worth millions of euros.

The collection was stolen during a violent home invasion in Aachen, Germany, in 2024.

Two years later, this bag surfaced for sale with a well-known vintage handbag dealer. We were able to identify it online by 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝗴. The match was subsequently confirmed in person through the serial numbers.

Recovering it, however, was another matter. The dealer was initially reluctant to cooperate: “𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺.” Unfortunately, this is an attitude we encounter regularly when confronting dealers who have purchased stolen property. Once they realise they bought from a questionable source — and may have little prospect of recovering their money from that source — their frustration can quickly be directed at the theft victim instead.

𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, and with ZERO assistance from law enforcement, we secured the unconditional surrender of the stolen Hermès bag. Fortunately, the victim had insured the collection. The insurance company that retained us will now be returning the bag to its owner.

Alongside Nazi-looted art, stolen artworks, rare watches and automobiles, we now have several pending recoveries involving Hermès, Chanel, Miu Miu and Brioni handbags. We have also assisted in cases that resulted in two people being arrested in the UK and Italy in connection with stolen handbags being sold through eBay and other online retailers.

The broader lesson is a simple one: 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 — and keep the valuations on your insurance schedules up to date. This particular bag was purchased in 2019 for €26,000. Today, it is valued at approximately €80,000. For collectible handbags, watches, art and other rapidly appreciating assets, an outdated insurance valuation can become a very expensive oversight.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? I’m sure the police will be eager to interview the dealer and explore whether she can help locate the remaining rare handbags. Right after Oktoberfest, presumably. 🙄
